John McCain has released a new ad in states bordering Airzona. The ad, targeted at Hispanic Americans features a video from a Repubican Debate in which John McCain expounds upon the service of Hispanics in America. The ad doesn’t say anything substantive, doesn’t lay out a position, or even say anything about the candidate himself. Apparently Hispanic Americans are supposed to be thankful to John McCain for running an ad that recognizes their service.
I think it’s wonderful to recognize their service, and maybe it is important for him to do so in the face of vehement anti-immigration racists such as Lou Dobbs.
But it still just seems like pandering to me.
Is he promising to help Hispanic Americans face outright racism? Is he going to help eliminate institutionalized racism and the wage gap for Hispanic Americans (which is even worse than the wage gap between blacks and whites in America)? Is he for affirmative action? No, but hey, he ran an ad in four states recognizing the sacrifices you’ve made for our country, vote for him.
It seems to be pretty poorly produced, which is a theme for McCain’s ads, and I don’t see how it could be at all effective. What do you think?
